Calico Deadlock Guide (2026): Build, Abilities & Combos
Learn Calico abilities, the current Spirit build, skill priority, Ava routes, Return to Shadows timing, melee combos, and counterplay.
Approaching from an unseen lane, bursting a separated target, and escaping retaliation through shadow movement
Updated July 21, 2026: Calico is a medium-complexity assassin who scatters Spirit bombs, dashes into a healing melee slash, scouts or rotates through Ava, and becomes untargetable during Return to Shadows.
Calico is strongest on the edge of a fight rather than at its center. Ava finds the route, Gloom Bombs make the destination dangerous, Leaping Slash converts proximity into damage and healing, and Return to Shadows creates a brief untargetable window for the decisive pass.
Current meta snapshot: Tracklock’s standard-mode, all-rank table showed Calico at a 36.67% pick rate and 51.68% win rate when checked July 21. These numbers move as matches arrive; they explain why this guide exists, not what every future patch will look like.
Calico At A Glance
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Game-data type | Assassin |
| Practical role | Flanking Spirit assassin, melee skirmisher, scouting cat, and untargetable backline disruptor |
| Complexity | 2 of 3 |
| Starting health | 730 |
| Move speed and stamina | 6.8 m/s and 3 stamina |
| Best at | Approaching from an unseen lane, bursting a separated target, and escaping retaliation through shadow movement |
| Main risk | Spending both Ava and Return to Shadows on the entry, then being stranded beside a prepared enemy team |
Calico Abilities
| Slot | Ability | What it does | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gloom Bombs | Throws a cluster of delayed bombs that deal Spirit damage; repeat hits from the same cluster deal reduced damage. | Cover an exit, pressure a grouped lane, soften a target before the dash, or force movement into Calico's approach. |
| 2 | Leaping Slash | Dashes forward, then slashes every enemy in a circle for melee damage and heals Calico when at least one hero is hit. | Close the final distance after the target spends movement, hit a clustered group, or recover health during the exit. |
| 3 | Ava | Possesses Ava, gaining movement speed that grows over time and hiding from the minimap; hero damage resets the bonus and briefly disables Ava. | Scout a flank, rotate without broadcasting the route, or approach from terrain before the real ability sequence begins. |
| 4 | Return to Shadows | Instantly becomes untargetable and faster, deals Spirit damage on entry, then returns after a delay with a second Spirit-damage pulse. | Avoid a key response, pass through the dangerous part of a fight, and time the return pulse beside the intended target. |
Calico has excellent access but still needs an ordered plan. Ava is information and movement, Gloom Bombs shape the landing area, Leaping Slash rewards close contact, and Return to Shadows should cover the most dangerous response rather than merely start the fight.
Best Calico Ability Order
Tracklock’s largest completed skill-max route on the July 9 patch prioritized:
- Return to Shadows
- Gloom Bombs
- Ava
- Leaping Slash
This is the largest completed max-order route in the current standard-match sample. It prioritizes the untargetable damage window, then repeatable Spirit pressure; Leaping Slash remains essential at base value even when its final upgrades arrive later.
Calico Build
| Stage | Current popular package | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Early | Melee Lifesteal, Spirit Strike, Stalker, Cold Front | Supports the close-range trade, adds Spirit pressure, and helps Calico keep a target nearby after the approach. |
| Core | Spirit Snatch, Dispel Magic, Hunter's Aura, Torment Pulse | Rewards fighting near one target, removes defensive effects, and keeps Spirit damage active through a committed pass. |
| Late | Arctic Blast, Scourge, Superior Cooldown, Mystic Vulnerability | Adds a high-impact Spirit active, resistance pressure, and more frequent shadow and bomb cycles. |
The current pro sample is a close-range Spirit route. The early package makes the first contact survivable, while Spirit Snatch, Arctic Blast, Scourge, and cooldown investment reward Calico for staying close long enough to complete both halves of Return to Shadows.
This is a dated route, not a shopping script. Check the live Calico pro-build sample, compare alternatives in the Deadlock builds guide, and use the items guide when the enemy composition demands a counter purchase.
Situational Purchases
- Buy Counterspell when one instant control effect consistently catches Calico as the untargetable window ends.
- Use Debuff Reducer or a direct resistance item when the same silence or burst prevents every second ability cycle.
- Choose extra movement only when access is the real problem; do not replace the durability needed to survive the return point.
How To Play Calico
Lane
Use Gloom Bombs to contest space and souls without standing in the opponent's preferred line. Leaping Slash is strongest after movement is spent, and Ava should remain available when the lane can punish an exposed retreat.
Mid Game
Use Ava to inspect side routes and arrive off the minimap. Place bombs where the target wants to escape, close with the slash, and reserve Return to Shadows for the enemy's control or burst instead of casting every ability at once.
Teamfights
Wait for the front line to reveal the important cooldowns. Enter from a side, pressure one backline target, become untargetable through the response, and make sure the return location still connects to allies or cover.
Late Game
A failed return point can decide the match. Scout before committing, value a protected second cycle over a rushed solo kill, and use bombs and Spirit actives to make the enemy move before exposing Calico.
Calico Combos And Fight Patterns
- Flank: approach through Ava, place Gloom Bombs across the escape, Leaping Slash into the target, then use Return to Shadows through the defensive response.
- Spirit burst: apply close-range item effects, trigger Return to Shadows beside the target, layer Arctic Blast or another Spirit active, then position the return pulse on the retreat line.
- Defensive reset: use Return to Shadows to avoid the key control, move toward cover during untargetability, then Leaping Slash a hero on return for healing if the exit remains safe.
Calico Strengths And Weaknesses

How To Counter Calico
- Watch likely side routes instead of staring only at the front line.
- Delay control until Return to Shadows ends and Calico becomes targetable again.
- Move away from Gloom Bomb clusters before fighting over the same small area.
- Punish Ava after hero damage resets its movement advantage.
- Group closely enough to protect the intended target without stacking inside every Spirit effect.
Common Calico Mistakes
- Using Ava as the whole engage without scouting the destination.
- Casting Return to Shadows before the enemy commits a meaningful response.
- Returning beside several healthy enemies with no allied pressure.
- Slashing too early and losing the heal during the dangerous part of the trade.
- Buying pure Spirit damage while every flank dies to the same control effect.
Calico Lore
Calico left the Baxter Society after deciding that killing monsters for free was less profitable than contract killing. The former decorated member now uses her supernatural talents as an in-demand assassin.

Calico FAQ
What is the best Calico build?
The current pro sample starts with melee and Spirit contact tools, moves into Spirit Snatch, dispel and proximity effects, then adds Arctic Blast, Scourge, cooldown, and vulnerability.
Is Calico untargetable during Return to Shadows?
Yes. Current game data describes Calico as instantly becoming untargetable before returning after a delay and dealing a second Spirit-damage pulse.
What should Calico max first?
The largest completed current route maxes Return to Shadows first, followed by Gloom Bombs, Ava, and Leaping Slash.
What counters Calico?
Side-route vision, delayed control at her return point, movement away from bomb clusters, and grouped protection around the target reduce her flank value.
Sources And Methodology
Hero type, complexity, starting stats, ability names, and ability descriptions were checked July 21, 2026 against the current Deadlock API asset data. That independent project parses the live game files; it is not Valve.
The meta snapshot comes from Tracklock’s standard hero table. The item package comes from its rolling 213-game Calico pro sample, and the skill priority comes from completed normal matches on the July 9 patch. Tracklock says it captures a large proportion of matches, not every match. Pick rate, win rate, item frequency, and completed-build win rate answer different questions and must not be treated as interchangeable proof.
Valve’s July 9, 2026 update is the current official patch reference. Deadlock remains in active development, so recheck the live build and patch notes before copying a route into a later version.
