What is Deadlock's lore?

Updated July 21, 2026: Deadlock takes place in the Cursed Apple, an occult version of New York where the supernatural is public and every standard match is part of a Ritual. Heroes gather souls and fight for one of two rival Patrons, the Hidden King or the Archmother, because the winning side may receive the wish or power that brought them into the conflict.

Valve's Old Gods, New Blood page is the clearest current official introduction to the Patrons and their claims on the city. The wider story comes from biographies, voice lines, map details, factions, item text, and other in-game evidence.

Deadlock is still in early development, so this hub separates official material and strong in-game support from inference and community theory. Start with the story overview, then move into the timeline, Patrons, Maelstrom, factions, and individual hero files.

Evidence Guide

Confirmed lore versus theory

Deadlock leaves room for interpretation, but not every interesting connection carries the same evidentiary weight.

Official: Valve currently presents the Hidden King and Archmother as rival Patrons with distinct followers, bases, and claims on the city.

Strong in-game support: the match is a Ritual in the Cursed Apple, souls have an in-world purpose, and heroes arrive with personal reasons to bargain for a wish.

Inference: the strongest public timeline clues point to alternate-history New York around 1949, but the exact year remains unstated.

Theory: complete Astral Gate maps, some Maelstrom chronology, and direct links between the Hidden King and outside mythologies should remain labeled as speculation.

Quick Answers

Deadlock lore FAQ

Does Deadlock have a story?

Yes. The match systems are tied to the fiction: teams collect souls, break through a supernatural New York, and try to complete a Ritual for a rival Patron.

What is the Cursed Apple?

The Cursed Apple is Deadlock's alternate supernatural New York, where occult agencies, criminal groups, monsters, spirits, and ordinary city life all overlap.

What is the Ritual in Deadlock?

The Ritual is the in-world event represented by a standard match. Heroes collect souls and defeat the opposing side so their Patron can complete its claim and potentially grant their wish.

When does Deadlock take place?

The safest answer is alternate-history New York in the early-to-mid 20th century. Current clues make roughly 1949 a useful anchor, but Valve has not published a final canon date.

Who are the Deadlock Patrons?

The current rival Patrons are the Hidden King and the Archmother. Valve describes each as a power whose followers are trying to bring them into the city through the Ritual.

Why are the Deadlock heroes fighting?

Each hero has a personal motive. Some want to restore a person or place, escape a curse, gain power, return home, protect a community, or solve a crisis that ordinary institutions cannot fix.

Is Deadlock lore final?

No. Valve describes Deadlock as being in early development, so names, art, story details, and the strength of individual clues can still change.
