Yamato Deadlock Guide (2026): Build, Abilities & Combos
Learn Yamato abilities, the current Spirit build, skill priority, Power Slash timing, Flying Slash entries, Shadow Transformation, and counterplay.
Threatening a charged Spirit strike from cover, grappling into a wounded target, and refreshing abilities during a protected transformation window
Updated July 21, 2026: Yamato is a high-complexity assassin with a charged Spirit slash, a grappling melee entry, a self-healing area slash, and an invincible transformation that refreshes abilities and accelerates the next sequence.
Yamato wants to threaten damage before revealing the final entry. Power Slash can charge from cover, Flying Slash reaches the selected target, Crimson Slash helps survive close contact, and Shadow Transformation turns one committed cycle into a faster second cycle with major resistances.
Current meta snapshot: Tracklock’s standard-mode, all-rank table showed Yamato at a 33.42% pick rate and 50.89% win rate when checked July 21. These numbers move as matches arrive; they explain why this guide exists, not what every future patch will look like.
Yamato At A Glance
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Game-data type | Assassin |
| Practical role | Charged-damage assassin, grappling skirmisher, self-healing melee threat, and transformation-based reset fighter |
| Complexity | 3 of 3 |
| Starting health | 730 |
| Move speed and stamina | 8.2 m/s and 3 stamina |
| Best at | Threatening a charged Spirit strike from cover, grappling into a wounded target, and refreshing abilities during a protected transformation window |
| Main risk | Flying into several enemies before Power Slash and transformation timing can justify Yamato's low starting health |
Yamato Abilities
| Slot | Ability | What it does | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Power Slash | Channels for up to 1.4 seconds before releasing a sword strike; a full charge deals the most damage, while an early release deals partial damage. | Charge behind cover, punish a predictable route, or release early when movement and safety matter more than maximum damage. |
| 2 | Flying Slash | Throws a grappling hook, pulls Yamato toward the enemy, deals light melee damage, and slows the target on arrival. | Reach a wounded or isolated hero after the first damage lands, follow movement, or cross terrain with a known landing position. |
| 3 | Crimson Slash | Slashes enemies in front, deals damage, slows their fire rate, and heals Yamato when at least one enemy hero is hit. | Sustain the close-range trade, reduce incoming weapon pressure, and stabilize after Flying Slash or transformation. |
| 4 | Shadow Transformation | Begins with an invincible transformation, refreshes Yamato's abilities, makes them 60% faster, grants negative-status immunity and major resistances, and extends on hero kills while healing. | Absorb the critical response, reset the ability cycle, and continue only when a kill or protected exit can use the duration. |
Yamato is powerful because she can present two ability cycles, but the first one still needs discipline. Power Slash creates the opening, Flying Slash commits to the target, Crimson Slash maintains health, and Shadow Transformation should refresh a meaningful second sequence rather than rescue an entry with no destination.
Best Yamato Ability Order
Tracklock’s largest completed skill-max route on the July 9 patch prioritized:
- Power Slash
- Flying Slash
- Shadow Transformation
- Crimson Slash
The largest completed current route maxes Power Slash first and Flying Slash second. Shadow Transformation follows for the reset window; Crimson Slash remains vital base sustain even when its final upgrades arrive last.
Yamato Build
| Stage | Current popular package | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Early | Mystic Shot, Spirit Strike, Melee Lifesteal, Restorative Shot | Supports Spirit burst, close contact, and enough lane sustain to keep threatening charged slashes. |
| Core | Spirit Snatch, Healbane, Improved Spirit, Torment Pulse | Scales the close-range Spirit cycle, limits enemy recovery, and keeps pressure active after the grapple. |
| Late | Superior Cooldown, Tankbuster, Boundless Spirit, Refresher | Improves repeated Spirit sequences and can create another transformation opportunity in a decisive late fight. |
The current pro sample is strongly Spirit-oriented but still supports melee contact and recovery. Mystic Shot and Spirit Strike help the early sequence, Spirit Snatch and Torment Pulse reward staying close, and cooldown plus Boundless Spirit make the transformed second cycle much more threatening.
This is a dated route, not a shopping script. Check the live Yamato pro-build sample, compare alternatives in the Deadlock builds guide, and use the items guide when the enemy composition demands a counter purchase.
Situational Purchases
- Buy Diviner's Kevlar when the transformation window needs more protection to finish the target.
- Use Counterspell or direct resistance when Yamato dies before Shadow Transformation can convert the entry.
- Choose Weighted Shots only when the match provides enough weapon uptime; the current core is primarily built around Spirit cycles.
How To Play Yamato
Lane
Threaten Power Slash from cover and release early when a full channel becomes obvious. Preserve Flying Slash when the landing point is unsafe, and use Crimson Slash on a hero to recover health rather than spending it only on the wave.
Mid Game
Start with charged damage or allied control before grappling. Flying Slash into the target, use Crimson Slash to sustain, then transform through the important enemy response and use the refreshed, faster abilities to finish or leave.
Teamfights
Work a side angle where Power Slash can threaten the backline without exposing the channel. Commit after control appears, transform while several enemies are trying to answer, and choose the second cycle based on health and allied position.
Late Game
Yamato can survive a spectacular amount during transformation, but not after it ends. Track the duration, secure the kill extension only when it is real, and leave enough movement to reach cover before resistances disappear.
Yamato Combos And Fight Patterns
- Standard entry: charge Power Slash from cover, release into the target, Flying Slash to close, then Crimson Slash for damage, fire-rate slow, and healing.
- Two-cycle fight: use the first slash and grapple sequence, cast Shadow Transformation through the enemy response, then repeat the refreshed abilities at increased speed.
- Defensive transform: start Shadow Transformation as the dangerous control or burst arrives, reposition during the resistant window, heal with Crimson Slash, then decide whether the refreshed grapple is an exit or finish.
Yamato Strengths And Weaknesses

How To Counter Yamato
- Break line of sight or change elevation while Power Slash charges.
- Save displacement for Flying Slash arrival rather than the initial threat.
- Spread so Yamato cannot heal from several heroes with Crimson Slash.
- Disengage during Shadow Transformation and re-engage as the duration ends.
- Deny the low-health kill that would heal Yamato and extend transformation.
Common Yamato Mistakes
- Holding every Power Slash for a full charge when an early release is safer.
- Using Flying Slash before confirming the landing position.
- Transforming after the first cycle is already lost instead of through the key response.
- Ignoring the duration while chasing a possible extension.
- Building damage without enough defense to reach the second cycle.
Yamato Lore
Kaori and her brother Yamato inherited leadership of the Seventh Moon. After a violent revolt killed her brother, Kaori fled Japan and adopted the name Yamato in America, preserving his memory while carrying forward their ambition.

Yamato FAQ
What is the best Yamato build?
The current pro sample starts with Mystic Shot, Spirit Strike and sustain, adds Spirit Snatch, Healbane and Spirit scaling, then invests in cooldown, Tankbuster, Boundless Spirit, and sometimes Refresher.
Does Shadow Transformation refresh Yamato abilities?
Yes. Current game data says the transformation refreshes her abilities, makes them faster, grants status immunity and major resistances, and can extend after a hero kill.
What should Yamato max first?
The largest completed current route maxes Power Slash, then Flying Slash, Shadow Transformation, and Crimson Slash.
What counters Yamato?
Line-of-sight breaks during Power Slash, displacement on grapple arrival, spread positioning, disengaging during transformation, and denying kill extensions reduce her two-cycle pressure.
Sources And Methodology
Hero type, complexity, starting stats, ability names, and ability descriptions were checked July 21, 2026 against the current Deadlock API asset data. That independent project parses the live game files; it is not Valve.
The meta snapshot comes from Tracklock’s standard hero table. The item package comes from its rolling 249-game Yamato pro sample, and the skill priority comes from completed normal matches on the July 9 patch. Tracklock says it captures a large proportion of matches, not every match. Pick rate, win rate, item frequency, and completed-build win rate answer different questions and must not be treated as interchangeable proof.
Valve’s July 9, 2026 update is the current official patch reference. Deadlock remains in active development, so recheck the live build and patch notes before copying a route into a later version.
