McGinnis Deadlock Guide (2026): Build, Turrets & Wall
Learn McGinnis abilities, the current hybrid build, skill priority, turret placement, Spectral Wall control, Heavy Barrage, and counterplay.
Building a defensible firing pocket with Turrets and Specter, then using Spectral Wall to trap enemies inside Heavy Barrage pressure
Updated July 21, 2026: McGinnis is a low-complexity mystic who deploys Spirit-damage Mini Turrets, heals an area with Medicinal Specter, divides terrain using Spectral Wall, and launches targeted rockets through Heavy Barrage.
McGinnis controls a chosen area better than she escapes a failed one. Turrets need protected sightlines, Medicinal Specter needs allies close enough to use it, Spectral Wall should divide a real commitment, and Heavy Barrage needs a target area that cannot be left immediately. Placement is the hero's mobility system.
Current meta snapshot: Tracklock’s standard-mode, all-rank table showed McGinnis at a 17.62% pick rate and 54.55% win rate when checked July 21. These numbers move as matches arrive; they explain why this guide exists, not what every future patch will look like.
McGinnis At A Glance
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Game-data type | Mystic |
| Practical role | Entrenched hybrid controller, deployable turret specialist, area healer, terrain splitter, and long-range rocket caster |
| Complexity | 1 of 3 |
| Starting health | 780 |
| Move speed and stamina | 6.7 m/s and 2 stamina |
| Best at | Building a defensible firing pocket with Turrets and Specter, then using Spectral Wall to trap enemies inside Heavy Barrage pressure |
| Main risk | Setting every deployable in one exposed location and spending Spectral Wall before the enemy commits, leaving a slow two-stamina hero without a reset |
McGinnis Abilities
| Slot | Ability | What it does | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mini Turret | Deploys a limited-lifetime turret that fires at enemies for Spirit damage over time, with reduced damage against troopers and objectives. | Cover different angles, protect the turret from immediate focus, and place it where an enemy must expose themselves to remove it. |
| 2 | Medicinal Specter | Deploys a spirit that heals nearby allies. | Anchor a push or defense where allies can remain in the healing area without stacking into one easy enemy attack. |
| 3 | Spectral Wall | Casts a moving wall that slows enemies it passes through; erupting it divides terrain and damages nearby enemies, and melee attacks can destroy it. | Split the front line from the backline, cut an escape route, interrupt movement through a choke, or protect the deployable pocket. |
| 4 | Heavy Barrage | Launches a volley of rockets that home toward a targeted location while slowing McGinnis; stamina remains usable. | Fire after Wall or allied control limits exits, pressure an objective, and keep stamina ready to correct position during the channel. |
McGinnis rewards layered placement. A turret alone is easy to remove, a Specter alone is easy to leave, and Barrage alone is easy to dodge. Wall changes those answers by dividing the terrain. The kit becomes oppressive only when each piece protects or extends another piece.
Best McGinnis Ability Order
Tracklock’s largest completed skill-max route on the July 9 patch prioritized:
- Heavy Barrage
- Mini Turret
- Spectral Wall
- Medicinal Specter
This is the most-played completed max-order route in the current standard-match sample. It prioritizes Heavy Barrage, then turret pressure and terrain control. Medicinal Specter remains essential sustain at base value even when its final upgrades arrive last.
McGinnis Build
| Stage | Current popular package | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Early | Intensifying Magazine, Heroic Aura, Extra Charge, Monster Rounds | Strengthens sustained weapon fire and nearby units while adding turret access and reliable early wave control. |
| Core | Suppressor, Healbane, Mystic Vulnerability, Mystic Expansion | Adds fire-rate suppression, anti-heal, Spirit amplification, and broader area pressure around deployables. |
| Late | Rapid Recharge, Echo Shard, Greater Expansion, Escalating Exposure | Creates denser deployable cycles, repeated key casts, larger areas, and increasing Spirit damage during prolonged control. |
Tracklock currently shows 30 pro games, so exact frequencies are directional. The route is a coherent hybrid: Intensifying Magazine and Heroic Aura reward sustained weapon and unit pressure, while charges, Suppressor, vulnerability, expansion, Echo Shard, and Escalating Exposure make the fortified Spirit area harder to break.
This is a dated route, not a shopping script. Check the live McGinnis pro-build sample, compare alternatives in the Deadlock builds guide, and use the items guide when the enemy composition demands a counter purchase.
Situational Purchases
- Buy Enduring Speed when slows prevent McGinnis from reaching the next setup point.
- Use Reactive Barrier when a predictable control effect starts every enemy dive into the deployable pocket.
- Choose Indomitable when surviving the committed focus is more valuable than another damage multiplier.
How To Play McGinnis
Lane
Place Mini Turret where the opponent cannot shoot it without losing a soul or taking weapon fire. Use Medicinal Specter for meaningful shared recovery. Spectral Wall should trap a committed target or protect a retreat, not merely decorate the lane.
Mid Game
Arrive early and build the pocket before the objective fight begins. Stagger turrets across sightlines, place Specter behind cover, then Wall the route the enemy actually chooses. Heavy Barrage after movement is restricted and keep stamina for return fire.
Teamfights
McGinnis can split the enemy formation without chasing the backline. Erupt Wall between help and the focused target, apply Suppressor and Healbane through continued contact, and layer rockets over allied control. Reposition if the pocket becomes surrounded.
Late Game
Deployables die quickly when stacked in one obvious location. Use charge and Echo Shard value across separate angles, track melee threats to Wall, and keep a defensive purchase for the moment the enemy decides to cross the entire setup.
McGinnis Combos And Fight Patterns
- Fortified lane: place Specter behind cover, stagger Mini Turrets across two angles, then erupt Spectral Wall when the enemy commits to clearing one side.
- Rocket trap: Wall through the retreat route, detonate the barrier near the trapped target, then Heavy Barrage the limited area while turrets maintain contact.
- Defensive reset: Wall between the diver and allied help, place Specter on the retreat, drop a turret to punish pursuit, and use stamina during Barrage only after distance is restored.

How To Counter McGinnis
- Force a rotation away from the prepared turret pocket.
- Attack deployables from separate angles instead of walking through one choke.
- Use melee attacks to remove Spectral Wall when practical.
- Leave the Heavy Barrage target area before rockets accumulate.
- Apply anti-heal and focus McGinnis after her limited stamina is spent.
Common McGinnis Mistakes
- Stacking every turret where one area attack reaches all of them.
- Placing Medicinal Specter in enemy line of sight.
- Erupting Spectral Wall before the enemy commits to a side.
- Channeling Heavy Barrage without preserving stamina.
- Building only deployable damage while ignoring the need to survive a dive.

McGinnis FAQ
What is the best McGinnis build?
The current small pro sample combines Intensifying Magazine and Heroic Aura with charges, suppression, anti-heal, Spirit vulnerability, expansion, Echo Shard, and Escalating Exposure.
How should McGinnis place Mini Turrets?
Use protected, staggered sightlines so an enemy must expose themselves to weapon fire or another turret to clear one.
What should McGinnis max first?
The largest current completed route maxes Heavy Barrage, then Mini Turret, Spectral Wall, and Medicinal Specter.
What counters McGinnis?
Forcing rotations, attacking from several angles, clearing deployables, leaving Barrage, using anti-heal, and diving after stamina is spent reduce her setup.
Sources And Methodology
Hero type, complexity, starting stats, ability names, and ability descriptions were checked July 21, 2026 against the current Deadlock API asset data. That independent project parses the live game files; it is not Valve.
The meta snapshot comes from Tracklock’s standard hero table. The item package comes from its rolling 30-game McGinnis pro sample, and the skill priority comes from completed normal matches on the July 9 patch. Tracklock says it captures a large proportion of matches, not every match. Pick rate, win rate, item frequency, and completed-build win rate answer different questions and must not be treated as interchangeable proof.
Valve’s July 9, 2026 update is the current official patch reference. Deadlock remains in active development, so recheck the live build and patch notes before copying a route into a later version.
