Billy Deadlock Guide (2026): Build, Abilities & Chain Gang
Learn Billy abilities, the current close-range build, skill priority, Rising Ram entries, Blasted melee loops, Chain Gang, and counterplay.
Starting a chaotic close fight, locking several mobile heroes nearby, and alternating melee hits with amplified gunfire
Updated July 21, 2026: Billy is a high-complexity brawler who knocks enemies down and up, charges one target into the air, marks victims through melee hits, and chains nearby heroes to stop movement abilities before a delayed pull.
Billy wants the fight close enough for the bat, but not so deep that every enemy can focus him before help arrives. Rising Ram creates the first disruption, Bashdown keeps nearby enemies unstable, Blasted rewards alternating melee and bullets, and Chain Gang turns a scattered skirmish into Billy's preferred small arena.
Current meta snapshot: Tracklock’s standard-mode, all-rank table showed Billy at a 35.68% pick rate and 51.39% win rate when checked July 21. These numbers move as matches arrive; they explain why this guide exists, not what every future patch will look like.
Billy At A Glance
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Game-data type | Brawler |
| Practical role | Close-range brawler, knockup initiator, melee-amplified gun threat, and anti-mobility team controller |
| Complexity | 3 of 3 |
| Starting health | 820 |
| Move speed and stamina | 7.0 m/s and 3 stamina |
| Best at | Starting a chaotic close fight, locking several mobile heroes nearby, and alternating melee hits with amplified gunfire |
| Main risk | Charging into a group before allies can follow or losing line of sight during Chain Gang before the delayed pull |
Billy Abilities
| Slot | Ability | What it does | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bashdown | Slams the bat into the ground, pulls enemies down, deals melee damage, and sends a Spirit-damage shockwave that knocks enemies up. | Interrupt nearby movement, extend a Ram entry, or create the moment needed for a melee hit and amplified magazine. |
| 2 | Rising Ram | Charges head-first into an enemy and carries both Billy and the target into the air; hitting reduces the cooldown by half. | Start on an exposed hero, interrupt a channel, or lift a target long enough for allies to close the distance. |
| 3 | Blasted | Melee hits restore ammunition and apply Wrecked. Billy's bullets are amplified against Wrecked enemies, while more melee boosts health and extends the effect. | Alternate bat and gun damage rather than treating melee as a single opener, and use the ammo restore to avoid reloading during the finish. |
| 4 | Chain Gang | Chains nearby enemies to Billy, prevents movement abilities, heavily slows anyone pulling away, then yanks the group in for Spirit damage after a delay; line-of-sight loss breaks chains. | Deny escapes after allies commit, hold multiple enemies near Bashdown, and force mobile heroes to fight inside Billy's range. |
Billy's sequence is about maintaining contact without outrunning the team. Rising Ram and Bashdown create disruption, Blasted turns every successful melee into a stronger weapon phase, and Chain Gang becomes decisive only when terrain and allied pressure keep line of sight intact.
Best Billy Ability Order
Tracklock’s largest completed skill-max route on the July 9 patch prioritized:
- Rising Ram
- Bashdown
- Chain Gang
- Blasted
The largest completed current route maxes Rising Ram first and Bashdown second. Chain Gang follows for the team-control payoff, while Blasted remains part of every close-range damage loop even when its final upgrades arrive last.
Billy Build
| Stage | Current popular package | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Early | Close Quarters, Monster Rounds, Stalker, Slowing Bullets | Improves lane economy and gives Billy the proximity damage and stickiness needed to remain beside a Wrecked target. |
| Core | Spirit Snatch, Spirit Strike, Weighted Shots, Battle Vest | Rewards the melee-and-gun loop while adding enough weapon pressure and durability to survive the commitment. |
| Late | Greater Expansion, Scourge, Spirit Resilience, Debuff Reducer | Broadens team-control effects, pressures Spirit defense, and protects Billy during long close-range engagements. |
The current pro sample is a hybrid brawler route rather than a pure melee novelty. Close Quarters and Spirit Snatch reward contact, Weighted Shots makes the restored-ammo window threatening, and expansion plus defensive items help Chain Gang affect the fight without becoming an immediate trade.
This is a dated route, not a shopping script. Check the live Billy pro-build sample, compare alternatives in the Deadlock builds guide, and use the items guide when the enemy composition demands a counter purchase.
Situational Purchases
- Buy Colossus when the decisive fight requires Billy to hold several heroes nearby through focused damage.
- Use Counterspell when one predictable control effect stops Rising Ram or the Blasted follow-up.
- Choose Point Blank or another weapon finisher only after the build can survive long enough to use the amplified magazine.
How To Play Billy
Lane
Use Billy's strong movement speed and Monster Rounds to keep the economy stable. Threaten Rising Ram when the opponent steps away from cover, then weave one melee hit into gunfire instead of chasing a long bat-only exchange.
Mid Game
Approach with allies close enough to capitalize on the lift. Ram the exposed target, Bashdown as nearby enemies respond, apply Wrecked with melee, and hold Chain Gang for the moment escape abilities become the real problem.
Teamfights
Fight where walls and corners preserve chain line of sight. Chain Gang several heroes after they commit, stay close enough to threaten the delayed yank, and alternate melee and bullets while allies use the movement denial.
Late Game
One controlled carry can be more valuable than chaining the entire front line. Choose an entry the team can reach, keep a defensive active ready, and avoid charging across the whole base just because Rising Ram connected.
Billy Combos And Fight Patterns
- Single-target entry: Rising Ram the exposed hero, Bashdown on landing, melee to apply Wrecked and restore ammo, then fire the amplified magazine.
- Group lockdown: wait for movement abilities to matter, cast Chain Gang near several enemies, use Bashdown to disrupt the escape, and stay in line of sight for the delayed yank.
- Sustained brawl: melee for Wrecked and ammo, fire while the target is amplified, use control to remain close, then repeat the melee hit before the effect expires.
Billy Strengths And Weaknesses

How To Counter Billy
- Keep terrain between Billy and chained targets to break line of sight.
- Spread enough that one Chain Gang cannot control the whole backline.
- Save displacement or control for the end of Rising Ram and Bashdown.
- Avoid trading melee range after Blasted marks a target as Wrecked.
- Punish Billy when he charges farther than his allies can follow.
Common Billy Mistakes
- Using Rising Ram on the first visible tank instead of an exposed priority target.
- Casting Chain Gang where enemies can instantly turn a corner.
- Forgetting to melee and wasting Blasted's ammo and amplification loop.
- Buying only close-range damage without enough resistance to stay present.
- Continuing deeper after the target escapes allied reach.
Billy Lore
Billy is a furious brawler whose exact grievance changes by the minute. His past includes cops, magical regulation, bad service, and an unexplained goat head; the present mostly involves finding somewhere useful to point that rage.

Billy FAQ
What is the best Billy build?
The current pro sample starts with Close Quarters, lane economy, Stalker and slowing, adds Spirit Snatch, Spirit Strike and Weighted Shots, then invests in expansion and defensive late items.
How does Billy Blasted work?
Melee hits restore ammo and apply Wrecked. Billy's bullets are amplified against that target, so alternating melee and weapon damage is central to the kit.
What should Billy max first?
The largest completed current route maxes Rising Ram, then Bashdown, Chain Gang, and Blasted.
What counters Billy?
Breaking chain line of sight, spreading, saved displacement, avoiding Wrecked close-range trades, and punishing overextended Ram entries all reduce his control.
Sources And Methodology
Hero type, complexity, starting stats, ability names, and ability descriptions were checked July 21, 2026 against the current Deadlock API asset data. That independent project parses the live game files; it is not Valve.
The meta snapshot comes from Tracklock’s standard hero table. The item package comes from its rolling 155-game Billy pro sample, and the skill priority comes from completed normal matches on the July 9 patch. Tracklock says it captures a large proportion of matches, not every match. Pick rate, win rate, item frequency, and completed-build win rate answer different questions and must not be treated as interchangeable proof.
Valve’s July 9, 2026 update is the current official patch reference. Deadlock remains in active development, so recheck the live build and patch notes before copying a route into a later version.
