Shiv Deadlock Guide (2026): Build, Abilities, Rage & Counters
Learn Shiv abilities, the current Spirit build, skill priority, bleed stacking, Rage management, Killing Blow setups, and counterplay.
Stacking damage over time, surviving a longer exchange, and executing weakened heroes in sequence
Updated July 21, 2026: Shiv is a high-complexity brawler who stacks knife bleeds, dashes through targets, defers incoming damage, builds Rage, and executes low-health heroes with Killing Blow.
Shiv plays unfair by making every exchange last longer than the opponent expects. Knives create bleed pressure from range, Slice and Dice changes the angle, Bloodletting buys time against burst, and full Rage improves the kit before Killing Blow closes the account.
Current meta snapshot: Tracklock’s standard-mode, all-rank table showed Shiv at a 48.43% pick rate and 47.66% win rate when checked July 21. These numbers move as matches arrive; they explain why this guide exists, not what every future patch will look like.
Shiv At A Glance
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Game-data type | Brawler |
| Practical role | Bleed brawler, mobile Spirit skirmisher, deferred-damage tank, and low-health executor |
| Complexity | 3 of 3 |
| Starting health | 830 |
| Move speed and stamina | 6.5 m/s and 3 stamina |
| Best at | Stacking damage over time, surviving a longer exchange, and executing weakened heroes in sequence |
| Main risk | Diving before Rage and bleed pressure are established or mistaking deferred damage for damage that disappeared |
Shiv Abilities
| Slot | Ability | What it does | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Serrated Knives | Throws a knife that bleeds the target; additional hits stack the bleed and refresh its duration. | Start pressure safely, keep a retreating target in execute range, and build a damage lead before entering. |
| 2 | Slice and Dice | Dashes forward through enemies, dealing damage and applying a stacking Spirit-resistance reduction. | Cross a target, amplify the next Spirit damage, or reposition after knives have already forced movement. |
| 3 | Bloodletting | Defers part of incoming damage so it arrives over time; activating the ability clears a portion of that deferred damage. | Survive the burst window and clear deferred damage before the delayed total becomes lethal. |
| 4 | Killing Blow | Builds Rage passively from damage. The active leaps to an enemy hero, executes targets below the threshold, and grants a recast window after a successful finish. | Finish a target only after the health threshold is secure, then evaluate whether the 20-second recast enables another safe execution. |
Shiv has two health bars in practice: visible health and the Bloodletting damage still scheduled to arrive. Full Rage adds damage and special ability properties, so the strongest entry follows knife stacks and sustained combat rather than opening with a hopeful execute.
Best Shiv Ability Order
Tracklock’s largest completed skill-max route on the July 9 patch prioritized:
- Serrated Knives
- Slice and Dice
- Killing Blow
- Bloodletting
The largest completed route maximizes ranged bleed pressure first. Bloodletting remains essential at base value, but its later max timing reflects how often current builds win through knives, Spirit amplification, and execution tempo.
Shiv Build
| Stage | Current popular package | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Early | Extra Charge, Radiant Regeneration, Restorative Shot, Mystic Regeneration | Adds knife availability and sustain so Shiv can keep trading while bleed and Rage accumulate. |
| Core | Healbane, Dispel Magic, Enchanter's Emblem, Mystic Vulnerability | Leans into Spirit pressure, strips defensive effects, and limits the healing that would erase execute windows. |
| Late | Compress Cooldown, Superior Cooldown, Escalating Exposure, Counterspell | Creates more ability cycles, scales repeated Spirit hits, and protects the brawler during committed late fights. |
The current pro sample is Spirit-forward and highly sensitive to cooldowns. It does not treat Killing Blow as the entire kit: the execute becomes reliable because knives, resistance reduction, anti-heal, and sustained survival create the threshold.
This is a dated route, not a shopping script. Check the live Shiv pro-build sample, compare alternatives in the Deadlock builds guide, and use the items guide when the enemy composition demands a counter purchase.
Situational Purchases
- Buy Spirit Resilience when the enemy's Spirit burst consumes Bloodletting too quickly.
- Use Debuff Reducer when silence or control prevents the active damage clear and execute follow-up.
- Choose direct weapon defense when surviving sustained gunfire matters more than adding another scaling Spirit item.
How To Play Shiv
Lane
Preserve knife charges long enough to stack the same target instead of tagging everyone once. Use sustain to keep the health trade favorable, and reserve Slice and Dice for a punish or a needed exit.
Mid Game
Approach fights after the first defensive cooldowns appear. Stack bleed from a safe edge, build Rage, dash through a vulnerable target to reduce Spirit resistance, then track both current and deferred health before committing deeper.
Teamfights
Shiv wants a fight with several wounded enemies, not six healthy enemies looking at him. Keep knives moving, use Bloodletting before delayed damage becomes fatal, and execute only when the target marker and landing position are both favorable.
Late Game
A successful Killing Blow creates another chance, not an obligation. Check control, health, and deferred damage before taking the recast; one patient reset is often worth more than a second execution attempt into the enemy base.
Shiv Combos And Fight Patterns
- Bleed setup: stack Serrated Knives on one target, dash through with Slice and Dice, then continue Spirit pressure while resistance is reduced.
- Execute chain: reach full Rage, soften the target below the threshold, use Killing Blow, then reassess during the recast window instead of automatically diving again.
- Burst survival: take the initial exchange through Bloodletting, break line of sight, activate to clear deferred damage, then return while the opponent’s burst is unavailable.
Shiv Strengths And Weaknesses

How To Counter Shiv
- Cleanse or disengage before knife stacks become a full bleed problem.
- Track deferred damage and continue pressure after Shiv appears to survive the initial burst.
- Use anti-heal so regeneration and extended trades do not reset the execute race.
- Save displacement or control for Slice and Dice and Killing Blow entry points.
- Do not remain near execution range when Shiv has full Rage and a clean landing path.
Common Shiv Mistakes
- Spreading knife charges across targets instead of stacking bleed.
- Dashing in before Rage and resistance reduction matter.
- Forgetting the deferred Bloodletting damage still has to be handled.
- Using Killing Blow above the threshold as ordinary mobility.
- Taking every recast without checking the new landing position.
Shiv Lore
Shiv is a loyal member of the Baxter Society, an international order of monster hunters. His criminal past and rough manner unsettle traditional members, but his effectiveness against creatures that prey on the living is difficult to dispute.

Shiv FAQ
What is Shiv Rage?
Damaging enemies builds Rage. At full Rage Shiv gains increased damage and unlocks stronger properties on other abilities.
Does Bloodletting remove damage?
It defers part of incoming damage so it arrives over time. Activating Bloodletting clears a portion of the deferred amount, not every point automatically.
What is the best Shiv build?
The current pro sample is Spirit and cooldown focused: knife charges and sustain early, anti-heal and vulnerability in the core, then cooldown compression and Escalating Exposure.
What counters Shiv?
Cleanse, anti-heal, pressure through deferred damage, and saved control for his dash or execution landing reduce his extended-fight advantage.
Sources And Methodology
Hero type, complexity, starting stats, ability names, and ability descriptions were checked July 21, 2026 against the current Deadlock API asset data. That independent project parses the live game files; it is not Valve.
The meta snapshot comes from Tracklock’s standard hero table. The item package comes from its rolling 175-game Shiv pro sample, and the skill priority comes from completed normal matches on the July 9 patch. Tracklock says it captures a large proportion of matches, not every match. Pick rate, win rate, item frequency, and completed-build win rate answer different questions and must not be treated as interchangeable proof.
Valve’s July 9, 2026 update is the current official patch reference. Deadlock remains in active development, so recheck the live build and patch notes before copying a route into a later version.
