Apollo Deadlock Guide: Abilities, Builds, Combos, And Counters
Learn Apollo in Deadlock: what each ability is for, safe combo patterns, build priorities, lane and teamfight plans, common mistakes, and reliable counterplay.
Apollo wins the exchange before the blade lands by deciding which threat the opponent must respect next.
Updated July 21, 2026: Apollo is a mobile Deadlock duelist who wins through timing. Flawless Advance lets him begin a measured approach, Riposte turns a predicted hit into a counterattack, Disengaging Sigil creates space, and Itani Lo Sahn threatens a dramatic finish. He looks like a hold-forward hero, but he is much stronger when every entry still leaves him an exit.
Valve released Apollo on February 12, 2026 as the final hero in the Old Gods, New Blood rollout. Deadlock remains in early development, and Apollo has already received mechanical changes since release. Apollo Abilities Explained
| Ability | What it does for your plan | Beginner rule |
|---|---|---|
| Flawless Advance | Starts or extends an approach with timed strikes and escalating pressure. | Know where you will finish before using the first cast. |
| Riposte | Deflects incoming damage and creates a counterattack opportunity. | Use it on a readable threat, not simply because an enemy is nearby. |
| Disengaging Sigil | Damages and slows while Apollo jumps away to reset spacing. | Keep it available until the opponent commits or your trade is complete. |
| Itani Lo Sahn | Channels Apollo’s finishing threat and forces low-health enemies to respect his reach. | Cast after control is spent or from a position the enemy cannot punish. |
How To Play Apollo In Lane
Apollo’s lane is about controlled trades, not permanent aggression. Secure souls first, watch which enemy ability starts their damage pattern, and test whether they respond predictably when you step into range. A good Riposte read can flip a trade, but a missed read leaves you with one fewer answer when the opponent fights back.
Use this lane loop:
- Secure the wave and keep your soul economy stable.
- Identify the enemy’s easiest telegraphed damage or control tool.
- Pressure when that tool is unavailable or when you are ready to Riposte it.
- Keep Disengaging Sigil for the exit unless spending it will clearly end the trade.
- Return to the wave instead of chasing through unsafe space.
The lane gets dangerous when you spend movement to enter, miss Riposte, and continue fighting because the first part looked stylish. Apollo can survive mistakes, but his kit is not permission to make all of them in one trade.
Apollo Combo Patterns
Deadlock patches can change exact cast rules and values, so learn Apollo as a set of patterns rather than one rigid input string.
Safe trade
Use Flawless Advance to close or maintain useful distance, add weapon pressure while the opponent responds, then leave with Disengaging Sigil before the trade becomes a full commitment. This is the basic pattern because it preserves Riposte as insurance.
Bait and punish
Show the opponent a believable target, wait for the predictable damage, and time Riposte. Take the counterattack opportunity only if it leaves you in a position your team can support. A successful deflection is not automatically a command to travel deeper into the enemy team.
Finish an isolated target
Approach after the target has spent movement or control, keep pressure through their escape, and use Itani Lo Sahn when teammates or terrain prevent an easy interruption. The ultimate is more reliable as the final step of a won sequence than as an optimistic opening.
Defensive reset
Riposte the clearest incoming threat, use the resulting space if the counter is safe, and save Disengaging Sigil to break the next line of sight. Apollo does not have to win every exchange immediately; resetting with more health and better cooldowns is already a win.
Apollo Build Priorities
The best Apollo build changes with patches and opponents, but the jobs his items must perform are consistent. Do not copy a high-MMR build without checking which problem each purchase solves.
- Early lane power: buy enough weapon or Spirit pressure to secure souls and make short trades matter.
- Cooldown access: Apollo feels much safer when his approach, counter, and escape are available for the same fight.
- Mobility and stamina: extra movement options help him choose an angle without spending the ability needed to leave.
- Durability: health, resistance, or a defensive active can keep one missed timing from ending the fight.
- Anti-control tools: prioritize an answer when silence, stun, or movement restriction prevents Apollo from using his kit.
- Finishing power: add damage after the build can reliably deliver Apollo into and out of his threat range.

Apollo Teamfight Plan
Apollo is most comfortable on the edge of a fight, where he can threaten one target without absorbing six players’ attention. Let the first wave of control reveal itself, then choose whether the opening is a short trade, a committed pick, or only enough pressure to force the enemy backward.
- Attack from an angle that gives Disengaging Sigil somewhere useful to go.
- Track the enemy abilities Riposte can punish and the control that can interrupt your plan.
- Do not tunnel on the lowest health bar if reaching it crosses the entire enemy formation.
- Use the threat of Itani Lo Sahn to force movement even when casting it immediately would be unsafe.
- After a pick, help convert the advantage into a structure or objective instead of searching for another duel.
Apollo is a duelist, but Deadlock is still a team objective game. The cleanest solo kill means little if three lanes are collapsing into your own structures.
How To Counter Apollo
Apollo feels oppressive when he decides when every exchange starts and ends. Counterplay is about making those decisions expensive.
- Bait Riposte. Show a readable threat, delay the real damage, and punish the recovery instead of feeding the counter.
- Track Disengaging Sigil. Once Apollo spends his reset, his next approach carries much more risk.
- Create crossfire. A defense aimed at one predictable source is less useful when damage arrives from separate angles.
- Layer control. Make him answer one disable before using the ability that actually stops the escape or ultimate.
- Interrupt the finish. Save reliable control for Itani Lo Sahn when Apollo has not already forced it out.
- Stop chasing alone. Apollo wants one opponent to extend past help and turn a retreat into another duel.
Specific item answers change with shop patches. The durable rule is to buy for the part of Apollo’s pattern that is beating you: his movement, his defense, his burst window, or your inability to survive the follow-up.
Common Apollo Mistakes
- Opening with the escape tool and discovering there is no exit.
- Pressing Riposte on suspicion instead of reading an actual threat.
- Following every successful counterattack into unsafe space.
- Starting Itani Lo Sahn while reliable enemy control is still available.
- Building only damage and dying before the second decision.
- Chasing a duel while waves or objectives decide the match elsewhere.
- Using an old tooltip, video, or build without checking the current patch.
Apollo Deadlock FAQ
Is Apollo good for beginners?
Apollo is learnable but not effortless. His basic plan is clear, while Riposte and his movement reward matchup knowledge and precise timing. New players should practice a safe trade and an exit before trying elaborate combos.
What role does Apollo play?
He is a mobile duelist and pick threat who can pressure isolated targets, punish predictable attacks, and finish fights. He is less reliable when forced to absorb a whole team’s attention from the front.
What are Apollo’s abilities?
Apollo’s kit is Flawless Advance, Riposte, Disengaging Sigil, and Itani Lo Sahn. Valve introduced the four abilities together in his February 12, 2026 release announcement.
What should an Apollo build prioritize?
Start with lane pressure, cooldown access, mobility, and enough durability to survive a missed timing. Add finishing damage once the build can consistently create and escape a favorable fight.
How do you counter Apollo’s Riposte?
Make the first threat look real, delay the damage he expects, and punish after the defensive window. Attacking from multiple angles also makes one perfectly timed answer less decisive.
What does Itani Lo Sahn mean?
Valve uses Itani Lo Sahn as the name of Apollo’s ultimate and frames it as channeling Ixia’s might. Valve has not published a complete official translation or linguistic explanation, so broader meaning claims should be treated as interpretation.
The Short Version
Play Apollo like a fencer, not a battering ram. Enter with a reason, Riposte a threat you actually read, keep Disengaging Sigil for the point where the trade turns, and use Itani Lo Sahn after the enemy’s clean interruption is gone. Apollo is strongest when the opponent has to guess which beat of the exchange you are controlling next.
