Venator Deadlock Guide (2026): Build, Abilities & Ira Domini
Learn Venator abilities, the current weapon build, skill priority, trap routes, wall-stun setups, Ira Domini stakes, and counterplay.
Controlling a route, punishing enemies near walls, and converting a prepared firing lane into lethal stake damage
Updated July 21, 2026: Venator is a medium-complexity marksman who burns and weakens groups, knocks targets into walls, locks routes with a snap trap, and loads three high-damage Ira Domini stakes.
Venator is most dangerous when the map helps him. Walls turn Gutshot into a stun, narrow paths make Hex-Lined Snap Trap difficult to avoid, and a protected sightline lets Ira Domini spend its three stakes on priority targets rather than panic shots.
Current meta snapshot: Tracklock’s standard-mode, all-rank table showed Venator at a 44.33% pick rate and 46.18% win rate when checked July 21. These numbers move as matches arrive; they explain why this guide exists, not what every future patch will look like.
Venator At A Glance
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Game-data type | Marksman |
| Practical role | Weapon marksman, trap controller, wall-stun pick creator, and low-health execution threat |
| Complexity | 2 of 3 |
| Starting health | 820 |
| Move speed and stamina | 6.4 m/s and 3 stamina |
| Best at | Controlling a route, punishing enemies near walls, and converting a prepared firing lane into lethal stake damage |
| Main risk | Fighting in open space without a trap, wall angle, or protected line for the limited Ira Domini stakes |
Venator Abilities
| Slot | Ability | What it does | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Consecrating Grenade | Bounces before exploding for weapon damage, ignites enemies, reduces healing, and makes burning targets damage nearby enemies. | Open on a group, deny healing before the gun exchange, or pressure enemies standing close together. |
| 2 | Gutshot | Fires a shotgun blast that deals weapon damage and pushes enemies back; targets near a wall are stunned and take bonus damage. | Line up a wall collision, interrupt an approach, or create space before loading the crossbow. |
| 3 | Hex-Lined Snap Trap | Kicks out a trap that arms after a brief delay, then damages, immobilizes, and reveals the first enemy who touches it. | Control a doorway, protect a flank, or force an enemy to choose between the trap and Venator's firing line. |
| 4 | Ira Domini | Loads three crossbow stakes with massively increased weapon damage; the final blessed stake adds pure damage and executes low-health enemies. | Spend the first shots deliberately, then preserve the blessed final stake for a real execution or protected priority target. |
Venator mixes weapon damage with Spirit control, but his best sequences are positional. The grenade weakens healing, the trap fixes movement, Gutshot rewards nearby walls, and Ira Domini punishes the target once those conditions remove easy escape.
Best Venator Ability Order
Tracklock’s largest completed skill-max route on the July 9 patch prioritized:
- Ira Domini
- Consecrating Grenade
- Hex-Lined Snap Trap
- Gutshot
The two largest completed routes both maximize Ira Domini first and Consecrating Grenade second. Gutshot remains an important base tool; its later max reflects how current players prioritize stake conversion and repeated anti-heal pressure.
Venator Build
| Stage | Current popular package | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Early | Monster Rounds, Battle Vest, Cultist Sacrifice, Weakening Headshot | Builds lane economy, survivability, and weapon resistance pressure before expensive stake scaling. |
| Core | Weighted Shots, Slowing Bullets, Fortitude, Hollow Point | Improves sustained weapon pressure, keeps targets in the prepared lane, and adds durability for medium-range fights. |
| Late | Rapid Recharge, Ballistic Enchantment, Siphon Bullets, Vampiric Burst | Adds ability availability, weapon conversion, and the late sustain needed to finish high-value stake windows. |
The current pro sample is clearly weapon-forward, but it still buys ability availability and positioning. Venator needs enough gun scaling to make Ira Domini frightening and enough durability to remain in the sightline while the three shots matter.
This is a dated route, not a shopping script. Check the live Venator pro-build sample, compare alternatives in the Deadlock builds guide, and use the items guide when the enemy composition demands a counter purchase.
Situational Purchases
- Buy Counterspell when protected aim time matters more than another damage increase.
- Use Crippling Headshot against durable targets whose defenses survive the normal weapon package.
- Choose movement or debuff defense when the enemy repeatedly escapes the trap lane or disables Venator before Ira Domini fires.
How To Play Venator
Lane
Use Monster Rounds and weapon pressure to secure economy. Place Snap Trap where the opponent must expose themselves to clear or avoid it, and look for Gutshot wall angles instead of firing every blast into open lane.
Mid Game
Arrive early enough to prepare a doorway or objective route. Consecrating Grenade starts the anti-heal pressure, the trap controls retreat, and Gutshot pushes a target toward terrain before the high-damage stakes come out.
Teamfights
Fight from a protected medium-range lane. Load Ira Domini only when a teammate, trap, wall stun, or objective geometry can preserve the shot window; the blessed final stake should threaten an execution rather than disappear into a healthy tank.
Late Game
One trap or wall stun can decide a base fight. Guard a high-value route, keep the crossbow angle clean, and resist stepping into open space just to spend the final stake before the ability ends.
Venator Combos And Fight Patterns
- Wall pick: place Snap Trap near the route, use Consecrating Grenade as the enemy approaches, then Gutshot the target into a wall and fire Ira Domini.
- Objective lane: trap the flank, bounce the grenade into the group, load the crossbow from cover, and spend the blessed stake on the first target that reaches execute range.
- Peel: Gutshot a diver away, retreat through the protected trap line, then turn with weapon fire while the enemy is immobilized or forced to detour.
Venator Strengths And Weaknesses

How To Counter Venator
- Fight away from walls so Gutshot cannot add the stun and bonus damage.
- Clear or route around visible Snap Traps before the objective fight begins.
- Spread enough to reduce Consecrating Grenade's damage-sharing value.
- Break line of sight during Ira Domini and track the blessed final stake.
- Dive only after identifying whether Venator has a protected trap retreat.
Common Venator Mistakes
- Using Gutshot in open space when a small reposition creates a wall stun.
- Dropping the trap after the fight has already moved past it.
- Loading Ira Domini without cover or allied control.
- Spending the blessed final stake on a healthy defensive target.
- Building damage while ignoring Venator's movement and survival problem.
Venator Lore
Venator belongs to the Vatican-sanctioned Venators of St. Benedict, a small order sent to observe, identify, and exterminate supernatural predators. Even among that relentless order, this hardened hunter stands apart and has now been dispatched to New York.

Venator FAQ
How does Venator Gutshot stun?
The blast pushes enemies back. A target near a wall is stunned on the collision and takes bonus weapon damage.
What is the best Venator build?
The current pro sample is weapon-forward: economy and durability early, Weighted Shots and slowing in the core, then recharge, Ballistic Enchantment, and late lifesteal.
How many Ira Domini shots does Venator get?
Ira Domini loads three stakes. The final blessed stake adds pure damage and can execute a low-health enemy.
What counters Venator?
Open-space fights, trap clearing, spread positioning, line-of-sight breaks during Ira Domini, and pressure on his low movement speed reduce his prepared-lane advantage.
Sources And Methodology
Hero type, complexity, starting stats, ability names, and ability descriptions were checked July 21, 2026 against the current Deadlock API asset data. That independent project parses the live game files; it is not Valve.
The meta snapshot comes from Tracklock’s standard hero table. The item package comes from its rolling 132-game Venator pro sample, and the skill priority comes from completed normal matches on the July 9 patch. Tracklock says it captures a large proportion of matches, not every match. Pick rate, win rate, item frequency, and completed-build win rate answer different questions and must not be treated as interchangeable proof.
Valve’s July 9, 2026 update is the current official patch reference. Deadlock remains in active development, so recheck the live build and patch notes before copying a route into a later version.
