Graves Deadlock Guide (2026): Build, Abilities, Combos & Tips
A current necromancer guide to Jar of Dead, Grasping Hands, Essence Theft, Borrowed Decree, popular items, and objective control.
Collect the dead, close the route, and make the objective fight crowded.
Updated July 21, 2026: Graves is a medium-complexity marksman and necromancer who collects Deadheads with Jar of Dead, walls routes with Grasping Hands, steals combat power through Essence Theft, and summons a ghoul-producing gravestone with Borrowed Decree.
Graves controls space through bodies, walls, and repeated Spirit pressure. She is strongest when enemies must move through a predictable route or remain near an objective. Her summons create value over time, so hurried casts into empty space waste more of the kit than a missed burst spell would.
Graves At A Glance
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Primary job | Area denial, summons, sustained Spirit pressure, and objective control |
| Game-data type | Marksman |
| Complexity | 2 of 3 |
| Starting health | 730 |
| Move speed and stamina | 7.0 move speed and 2 stamina |
| Best at | Controlling chokes, contesting objectives, clearing space, and scaling summon pressure |
| Main risk | Poor setup, scattered fights, and losing value when enemies leave her controlled area |
Graves Abilities
| Slot | Ability | What it does | Practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jar of Dead | Collects remains from deaths into charges, then throws Deadheads that attack, pursue, and create repeatable Spirit pressure. | Prepare charges before an objective, clear space, pressure neutral camps, or force enemies to spend attention on summons. |
| 2 | Grasping Hands | Creates a long wall of grasping hands that slows and immobilizes enemies crossing it and produces a ghoul in the base ability. | Cut an escape route, divide a fight, protect a channel, or force enemies to cross predictable control. |
| 3 | Essence Theft | Weapon and current melee hits steal Weapon Damage and Spirit Resist from targets, with a cap and multiple-target upgrades. | Build power during sustained contact before committing the rest of the summon sequence. |
| 4 | Borrowed Decree | Summons a gravestone that produces ghouls over a long area-control window and slows enemies they pressure. | Own a choke, objective, base entrance, or extended teamfight where enemies cannot simply walk away. |
The July 9 update increased Jar of Dead’s first heal upgrade and neutral-creep buildup, reduced the Grasping Hands immobilize duration, allowed Essence Theft to proc from melee, and rearranged Borrowed Decree upgrades. Graves therefore rewards active farming and sustained contact, but her wall is not permission to stop aiming or positioning.
Best Graves Ability Order
The most-used current path starts by upgrading Jar of Dead twice, then unlocks Grasping Hands and Essence Theft before maxing Jar and taking the first Borrowed Decree upgrade.
- Jar of Dead
- Jar of Dead
- Grasping Hands
- Essence Theft
- Jar of Dead
- Borrowed Decree
- Jar of Dead
This route front-loads the repeatable summon engine. Move Grasping Hands upgrades earlier when the match is decided by chokes and peel, or emphasize Essence Theft when you can maintain safe weapon and melee contact against several targets.
Graves Build Priorities
| Stage | Popular item package | Why players buy it |
|---|---|---|
| Early | Restorative Shot, Extra Spirit, Extra Charge, Extra Stamina | Supports lane sustain, Deadhead pressure, more charges, and enough movement to set the next wall. |
| Core | Improved Spirit, Mystic Shot, Arcane Surge, Duration Extender | Improves Spirit output, repeated pressure, and the time enemies must respect controlled space. |
| Summon engine | Heroic Aura, Rapid Recharge, Superior Duration, Echo Shard | Strengthens units, adds ability repetition, and extends the windows that make Graves difficult to dislodge. |
| Late | Boundless Spirit, Superior Cooldown, Transcendent Cooldown, Toxic Bullets | Scales sustained pressure and lets Graves rebuild an objective-control cycle more often. |
Graves’ popular item package mixes Spirit, duration, charges, aura support, and cooldown. That is a map-control build, not a guarantee that every expensive summon item belongs in every game. Buy direct survival or cleansing when enemies can reach Graves before her controlled area becomes useful.

How To Play Graves
Lane
Collect Jar charges through nearby deaths and neutral camps without abandoning the wave. Use Deadheads to create a numbers problem, then place Grasping Hands where the opponent must cross it rather than where they already escaped.
Mid Game
Arrive at objectives with charges ready. Start Essence Theft through safe weapon pressure, use the wall to shape movement, and deploy summons only after the fight has a location.
Teamfights
Borrowed Decree needs time and space. Place it around a contested route or objective, layer Grasping Hands across the most valuable exit, then maintain contact so Essence Theft and Deadheads continue adding pressure.
Late Game
Defend narrow base routes and force the enemy to clear summons before touching structures. On offense, do not drop every cooldown at the first sight of a hero; wait until the team can hold the area Graves creates.
Graves Combos And Fight Patterns
- Lane pressure: Build Jar charges, throw Deadheads as the enemy commits to the wave, then place Grasping Hands across the retreat path.
- Objective hold: Borrowed Decree near the contested zone, Grasping Hands across the cleanest exit, then maintain Essence Theft while the summons occupy attention.
- Close-contact swing: Start Essence Theft with weapon hits, use melee when safe to keep stealing, then spend the gained pressure through Deadheads and the wall.
Graves Strengths And Weaknesses

How To Counter Graves
- Force Graves to fight before she has Jar charges and a prepared objective position.
- Leave or rotate around Borrowed Decree instead of feeding a long summon window.
- Approach Grasping Hands from multiple angles so one wall cannot stop the whole team.
- Pressure Graves directly when her summons are committed elsewhere.
- Use vertical movement, displacement, and spread positioning to avoid a single controlled lane.
Common Graves Mistakes
- Arriving at an objective with no Jar charges.
- Casting Grasping Hands behind the enemy instead of across the route they must use.
- Dropping Borrowed Decree in open space that the enemy can abandon.
- Ignoring weapon and melee contact even though Essence Theft rewards it.
- Buying summon scaling while repeatedly dying before summons develop value.
Graves Lore
Darcy Graves is a Blackmore Academy student and fledgling necromancer who found a severed lich hand after following a voice in Van Cortlandt Park. The dead became better listeners than her defense-attorney parents, and now they also provide homework, demands, and a surprisingly large battlefield workforce.

Graves FAQ
Is Graves beginner friendly?

What role is Graves?
Graves is a marksman and necromancer built around summons, area denial, sustained Spirit pressure, and objective control.
What should Graves upgrade first?
The most-used current path starts with two Jar of Dead upgrades, then unlocks Grasping Hands and Essence Theft before maxing Jar.
Does Graves Essence Theft work with melee?
Yes. Valve added melee-hit procs to Essence Theft in the July 9, 2026 update.
What counters Graves?
Early pressure, spread approaches, leaving her ultimate zone, and directly reaching Graves before the summon engine develops all reduce her value.
Sources And Methodology
The ability names, current game-data type, complexity, starting stats, and item popularity were checked July 21, 2026 through the independent Deadlock API, which parses current game data. The normal-match analytics window began June 20, 2026 and included 336,719 Graves appearances. The displayed ability path was the most-used complete sequence in a sample of 10,749 matches.
Popularity is not proof that an item or order causes wins. Players buy cheap items more often, late items appear mainly in long games, and hero difficulty changes outcomes. Treat the tables as a current starting route, then adapt to lane pressure, enemy damage, healing, crowd control, and your team composition.
Official source note: Valve’s Graves Prefers The Dead announcement establishes the hero’s intended identity. The latest relevant official update changed all four parts of the kit on July 9, 2026, including melee Essence Theft procs. Deadlock remains in active development, so ability values, items, and strategy can change.
