Deadlock July 9 Patch Notes: Urn Runner, Drifter, Shiv, and Every Hero Change
Valve's July 9, 2026 Deadlock patch nerfed Urn Runner speed, retuned Unstable Rift, hit Drifter and Shiv, and changed 13 heroes. Here is the complete breakdown.
The headline nerfs hit Drifter and Shiv, but the objective changes may touch every match.
Valve released the Deadlock July 9, 2026 patch with changes to the Urn Runner, Unstable Rift, objective bounty sharing, one item, and 13 heroes. Drifter and Shiv received the longest lists of nerfs, while Graves got a mixed rework and Silver and Victor received major ultimate cooldown buffs.
The update is officially titled Minor Update – 07-09-2026. It follows the June 30 Unstable Rift overhaul and the July 1 Shiv update, so several of its changes are a second tuning pass rather than a new system.
What Changed in the Deadlock July 9 Update?
- Urn Runner lost sprint and move-speed bonuses but gained stamina recovery.
- The Urn talks more often and can be heard from farther away.
- Unstable Rift warns players five seconds later, spawns tougher troopers more slowly, and expands its comeback resistance aura.
- Nearby objective bounty share fell from 40% to 30%, moving more of the payout into the team-wide split.
- Scourge’s maximum health per second dropped from 2.6% to 2.5%.
- Thirteen heroes received balance changes, with Drifter, Shiv, Graves, Doorman, and Mirage getting the largest packages.
Urn Runner and Unstable Rift Changes
The Urn Runner’s flat sprint bonus fell from +2 meters per second to zero. The trailing-team bonus moved from +7 to +5, and the normal move-speed bonus dropped from +3.5 to +2. Valve offset part of that mobility loss by raising stamina recovery from +15% to +25%.
Stealth also became harder. The Urn now speaks every six seconds instead of every eight, and its sound travels farther. That makes a carrier easier to track by ear even before the July 13 game-file update added hero-specific Urn chatter.
Unstable Rift’s warning window shrank from 25 seconds to 20. Rift Troopers gained scaling Spirit Resistance of 30%, 35%, 40%, or 45% plus 25% Melee Resistance. Their spawn interval slowed from 0.3 to 0.5 seconds, the comeback resistance aura expanded from 20 to 35 meters, and the maximum comeback trooper count rose from 12 to 14.
The net effect is not a simple Rift buff or nerf. Teams have less warning, the troopers are harder to erase with spirit or melee damage, and the comeback protection reaches farther. The staggered spawn rate gives players more time between bodies, but there can be more comeback troopers overall.
Why Drifter Took the Biggest July 9 Nerf
Drifter’s bullet damage growth per boon fell from +0.616 to +0.49, a cut of roughly 20%. Bloodscent’s third upgrade dropped from +12% to +11%. Stalker’s Mark moved from a 20-second base cooldown to 24 seconds and its top-tier bleed bonus fell from +2% to +1.5%.
There is one important talent detail. Stalker’s Mark’s second upgrade improved from an eight-second cooldown reduction to 12 seconds. A fully upgraded Mark therefore keeps the same 12-second effective cooldown it had before, while builds that do not take that upgrade wait longer.
The community read the package as a sharp response to Drifter’s post-patch strength. In the high-traffic Reddit patch thread, much of the early reaction centered on whether Valve had pushed him from top-tier back toward feast-or-famine territory. That is player interpretation, not a settled outcome; the actual effect needs post-patch match data.
Shiv’s Changes Move Power Into Upgrades
Shiv also lost raw scaling. Serrated Knives’ third upgrade fell from +0.09 to +0.07 Spirit scaling. Slice and Dice dropped from 1.44 to 1.2 scaling, and its second upgrade’s Spirit Resistance reduction weakened from 6% to 4%.
Bloodletting’s base cooldown increased from 20 to 25 seconds, but its first upgrade improved from -10 to -15 seconds, preserving a 10-second cooldown at that tier. Base damage cleared fell from 35% to 30%, while the second upgrade gained five points. Killing Blow’s base health threshold moved from 20% to 18%, while the third upgrade increased from +8% to +10%. In both cases, Valve removed baseline power and returned it through upgrades.
That distinction matters for search summaries calling the patch a blanket Shiv nerf. Early and incomplete builds are weaker. Several fully upgraded breakpoints remain close to their previous totals.
Graves, Doorman, and the Other Hero Changes
- Billy: Rising Ram’s third-upgrade Spirit scaling fell from 0.035 to 0.03.
- Doorman: bullet damage now starts lower and scales more per boon, his critical-hit penalty deepened, and a failed Hotel Guest checkout at the third upgrade now leaves a 15-second cooldown instead of 13.
- Graves: Jar of Dead heals with more Spirit scaling and builds faster from neutral creeps. Grasping Hands immobilizes for less time but gets a larger cooldown reduction at its third upgrade. Essence Theft can trigger from melee hits and can reach four targets when upgraded. Borrowed Decree’s ghoul-speed and spawn-time bonuses were rearranged across upgrades.
- Haze: Sleep Dagger’s second upgrade now applies 15 Fixation stacks, with its cooldown reduction trimmed by one second.
- Holliday: Powder Keg Spirit scaling fell from 1.2 to 1.05.
- Mirage: Fire Scarabs and Dust Devil lost scaling. Djinn’s Mark refreshes slightly faster, and Traveler’s third upgrade gained a larger cooldown reduction.
- Pocket: Affliction duration fell from 11 seconds to 10.
- Silver: Lycan Curse cooldown dropped from 80 seconds to 60.
- Victor: Shocking Reanimation cooldown dropped from 275 seconds to 240.
- Viscous: Splatter’s third-upgrade Spirit scaling fell from +1.0 to +0.9.
- Yamato: Flying Slash range fell from 28 to 26 meters, the third-upgrade charge delay rose from three to four seconds, and targeting an ally now requires alternate cast.
Did the July 9 Patch Fix Matchmaking?
No matchmaking change appears in Valve’s July 9 patch notes. Players waiting for a queue-quality update received objective and hero balance changes instead. That gap helped turn a normal balance post into another round of frustration, especially among high-rank solo players. DramaLock covers that separate search intent in its Deadlock solo queue matchmaking report.
A smaller data-tracked build followed on July 13 with new Soul Urn voice lines and Drifter Eternal Night sounds. That later build did not arrive with a normal Valve patch-note post.
