Graves Essence Theft In Deadlock: How Weapon Damage And Spirit Resist Steal Work
Graves 3 is Essence Theft, the weapon-pressure passive that steals damage and spirit resist before summons join the scam at max upgrade.
Essence Theft is Graves turning a trade into a quiet audit of the enemy stat sheet.
Short answer: Essence Theft lets Graves’ weapon steal weapon damage and spirit resist over time, up to a maximum amount per target. At the final upgrade, all of her summons apply Essence Theft too.

Current Mechanics
Deadlock.one’s current Graves data lists Essence Theft with a 4-second duration, 25 percent max weapon damage stolen with 0.3 scaling, 10 percent max spirit resist stolen, 3 max steal targets, and 4 seconds to reach max damage.
That makes Essence Theft the quiet part of Graves’ kit. Jar of Dead and Borrowed Decree put bodies on the screen. Grasping Hands changes movement. Essence Theft changes the trade math while the fight is happening.
Upgrade Path
- 1 AP: gain +5 max spirit resist stolen.
- 2 AP: gain +20 max weapon damage stolen.
- 5 AP: all summons now apply Essence Theft.
The first two upgrades make Graves’ direct weapon pressure more punishing. The 5 AP upgrade is the nasty one: once summons apply Essence Theft, the enemy is not only clearing clutter. They are dealing with clutter that can help hollow out their stats.
Patch Context
Valve’s Minor Update – 06-11-2026 did not list a direct Essence Theft change. The patch did, however, change Jar of Dead and Grasping Hands, while the May 31 update reduced Ghoul damage and increased Ghoul bounty. Those changes matter around Essence Theft’s final upgrade because summons are part of how the late version spreads the effect.
How To Use It
Keep shooting the targets that matter. Essence Theft rewards sustained contact more than one cute tap. If Graves can keep weapon pressure on a high-value enemy while summons and walls force movement, the enemy loses damage and resist while trying to solve three problems at once.
The 5 AP version asks for a broader plan. Jar of Dead and Borrowed Decree are no longer only pressure tools; they become delivery systems for the theft. That is where Graves starts to feel less like a hero with summons and more like an accounting department with a graveyard.
Counterplay
Break contact, clear summons, and do not let Graves farm uninterrupted uptime on priority targets. If the final upgrade is online, clearing summons is not just about reducing chip damage. It is also about stopping them from applying the stat drain.
