Deadlock’s July 1 Minor Update Rolls Shiv Back Toward Spirit Damage
Valve's July 1 Deadlock minor update focused on Shiv, changing alt-fire ammo cost, weapon spread, Slice and Dice damage behavior, and Killing Blow's threshold bonus.
A one-hero patch can still say a lot about what the last patch got wrong.
Valve’s July 1, 2026 Deadlock minor update was small enough to fit in one hero box, but it still matters because the hero was Shiv. The update changed alt-fire cost, weapon spread, Slice and Dice, and Killing Blow, making it a fast follow-up to the late-June balance state rather than a broad systems patch.
SteamDB lists the patch as build 24010557, dated July 1, 2026, with update notes coming through Steam Community. The important shape is straightforward: Shiv’s alt fire became cheaper to use, his weapon spread was fixed, Slice and Dice returned to spirit-damage behavior with a spirit-resistance reduction, Slice and Dice damage went up to 75, and Killing Blow’s T3 enemy-health threshold bonus was cut from 10 percent to 8 percent.
That combination reads less like a simple buff or nerf and more like a quick course correction. Valve did not publish a giant explanation around the change in the public sources reviewed, so the safest read is mechanical: Shiv’s very recent version was adjusted again, and the July 1 note moved part of his identity back toward spirit-damage pressure.
The Reddit discussion around the update shows why players treated it as more than a footnote. Some commenters framed the change as a rollback from melee Shiv. Others saw it as old Shiv returning with extra knife and ultimate adjustments. A few focused on the timing, joking that players barely had time to build around the previous version before the next change landed.
That timing is the drama. In a live playtest, rapid hero adjustment is normal. But in Deadlock’s current mood, even a small single-hero patch gets read through bigger questions: is balance moving too fast, too slowly, or sideways while matchmaking and content cadence remain the louder concerns?
For Shiv players, the answer is practical. Builds and lane habits that leaned into the previous version may need to be checked again. The fixed pellet spread and cheaper alt fire can matter early, while the Slice and Dice behavior change matters for how opponents itemize and how much spirit-resistance pressure Shiv can apply in fights.
For everyone else, the update is a reminder that Deadlock’s patch story is still being written in small corrections between bigger beats. July 1 did not answer the matchmaking complaint, the content-timeline complaint, or the optimization complaint. It did confirm that Valve is still willing to move quickly when a hero-specific change needs attention.
