Poppers’ Pupils Win Deadlock Night Shift #48 NA Over Melee Creeps
Melee Creeps brought Goober and oses into a rebuilt lineup, then ran into a Poppers' Pupils reverse sweep and a finals-MVP night from Lomein.
Poppers' Pupils lost the opener, changed the series, and kept the weekly seat.
Poppers’ Pupils beat Melee Creeps 2-1 in the Deadlock Night Shift #48 North America final on July 23, taking the $1,252.50 regional prize and sending the rebuilt Melee Creeps into next week’s challenger slot.
The result came with two hooks bigger than a routine weekly trophy. Melee Creeps had rebuilt around Goober, oses, Snakes, and birdee after the departures that followed their previous loss. They immediately looked dangerous. Then Poppers’ Pupils absorbed the best game of Goober’s return and won the next two.
Liquipedia lists Lomein as the finals MVP. In his own post after the match, Lomein sounded less convinced by the award than the bracket was. He credited Billy’s strength, highlighted a parry on an incoming swap as perhaps his best Deadlock play, and said he planned to stream heavily while waiting for the matchmaking update. DramaLock breaks down Lomein’s Billy parry clip separately.
Who won Deadlock Night Shift #48 NA?
Poppers’ Pupils finished first. Melee Creeps placed second, while Bird With Clock finished third after losing the one-game challenger match to Melee Creeps.
The regional prize was half of Night Shift #48’s combined $2,505 pool, which included the base prize and stream donations. Liquipedia records $1,252.50 for Poppers’ Pupils and qualification into the final of Night Shift #49. Melee Creeps also return next week, but they will have to survive the challenger match first.
In Europe, Abrahams beat Buff Enjoyers 2-1 to take the other half of the combined pool.
That format makes every final do two jobs. It crowns a winner and decides who gets the easier path seven days later. Poppers’ Pupils now get to wait. Melee Creeps have to prove the new roster can win through traffic.
Goober’s first game made the upset look possible
Melee Creeps earned the final by beating Bird With Clock in the challenger match. In the opening game against Poppers’ Pupils, the rebuild looked ready to skip the awkward introductory phase.
Deadfrag’s match recap credits Goober’s Silver with a 16/0/23 line in Game 1. That is the sort of debut score that normally becomes the entire headline: returning star, rebuilt roster, immediate win. Melee Creeps took the opener and put Poppers’ Pupils one map from losing their weekly seat.
It did not last.
How Poppers’ Pupils turned the series
Poppers’ Pupils stabilized in Game 2 by controlling the Mid Boss fights and the conversions that followed them. The deciding game never gave Melee Creeps the same opening they had found in Game 1.
Deadfrag reports that Poppers’ Pupils closed with Apollo, Pocket, and Silver in the deciding draft. The exact hero composition matters less than what followed: Poppers’ Pupils dictated the game instead of waiting for another Goober takeover. Their final two wins converted a rough opening into a 2-1 defense of the Night Shift title.
Lomein’s MVP award gives the comeback a face, but the larger story is the repeatability. Poppers’ Pupils did not need a clean sweep. They had enough answers to lose the opener, change the series, and leave with the prize.
What the result means for Melee Creeps
This was not a failed return for Goober or proof that the rebuilt team cannot work. Melee Creeps beat Bird With Clock, won a final game convincingly, and pushed the defending team to a decider.
It was also not the triumphant reset that the opener teased. The new lineup now has a week of public evidence for both versions of itself: the team that can release Goober into a perfect Silver game, and the team that can lose control once an opponent adjusts.
That is useful pressure. Melee Creeps’ last roster change came after a Night Shift loss. Night Shift #49 will show whether this version treats a narrow loss as a starting point rather than another detonation button.
When is Night Shift #49?
Liquipedia’s event pages already list both teams as advancing into the next edition. Poppers’ Pupils are scheduled for the final position; Melee Creeps return in the challenger position. The exact match order and opponent should be checked against the official Night Shift channels before publication if this draft runs after July 24.
