Graves Deadlock Lore: The Lich Hand and Blackmore Academy Explained

Darcy Graves went to the cemetery because the dead were easier to talk to than her parents. Then one of them answered.

The voice belonged to a woman who guided the teenager through Van Cortlandt Park and toward a lead-lined box buried beneath the ground. Inside was a severed lich hand. Most students would have run, called an adult, or at least reconsidered opening the supernatural container.

Graves accepted the hand as a mentor and started learning necromancy.

Now she carries the lich into Deadlock’s Ritual, promises to do whatever will make her happy, and ignores people who warn that the friendship may be a manipulation.

Who is Graves in Deadlock?

Darcy Graves is the daughter of wealthy, high-powered defense attorneys. She grew up in a home where conversation became debate, argument, or negotiation, while her parents’ cases left little time for a relationship with her.

The cemetery gave her quiet. Graves could talk through her problems without being cross-examined. The dead listened.

That one-sided comfort changed when a faint woman’s voice began replying. Graves followed its instructions until she uncovered the lead-lined box and freed the lich’s severed hand. With the prison open, the voice became stronger and offered the knowledge it said it had been waiting to pass to a student.

Graves was eager to learn.

What is the lich hand Graves carries?

The flaming green hand is the physical remains—and current speaking instrument—of Graves’ mentor, the Lich.

Graves idolizes her. Current relationship material describes the Lich as Graves’ best friend and teacher. The Jar of Dead was one of the first pieces of necromancy she taught the student, and the severed hand remains part weapon, part companion, and part supernatural access point.

The containment matters. Someone buried the hand in a lead-lined box. The biography does not identify who did it or why lead was necessary, but the construction implies deliberate fear and long-term containment. Graves sees a freed teacher. The box is evidence that somebody else saw a threat.

Is the Lich manipulating Graves?

The current lore strongly implies that possibility without confirming the Lich’s entire plan.

Other heroes warn Graves about the danger of carrying a lich’s hand. She dismisses them. Graves believes the Lich is helping her and has promised to complete the Ritual on her mentor’s behalf.

The Lich’s interests also extend beyond teaching:

Those desires suggest an entity gathering access to powerful occult objects and information through a devoted teenager. They do not prove that every lesson or expression of friendship is false.

That ambiguity is the point. Graves is not naïve in every part of her life. She is cynical, blunt, and accustomed to argument. The possible manipulation works because the Lich offered attention and purpose where Graves’ family did not.

What is Blackmore Academy?

Graves is a student at the elite Blackmore Academy. She balances necromancy, the demands of cemetery spirits, and ordinary schoolwork.

The contrast produces some of her best character details. She can call on the dead during a citywide Ritual and still owe a paper on Wuthering Heights. She once wrote about Johann Geist in a humanities course. She skips classes. She also babysits.

Blackmore does not make the supernatural separate from school life. It places young people already connected to Deadlock’s larger conflicts in the same institution. Graves shares classes with Apollo, whose current lore identifies him as 18, although Graves’ own exact age is not stated.

Why does Graves help the dead?

Graves does more than summon disposable ghouls. The Patrons describe her as working to honor the dead and give them peace. Many souls owe her favors, which she calls in during the Ritual.

Her graveyard clients have unfinished business. Graves helps resolve it, and part of her work appears to involve letting the living communicate with the dead.

That makes her combat kit ethically stranger than it first appears. The ghouls and hands are not necessarily random corpses enslaved for damage. They belong to a network of obligations between a necromancer and souls she has helped.

The arrangement can still be coercive or dangerous; current lore does not give every summoned spirit a contract. It does establish that Graves sees herself as a voice for the dead and calls the role an honor.

Why is Graves in the Ritual?

Her exact personal wish remains unknown.

Current voice-line and relationship evidence suggests she is fighting on behalf of the Lich. Graves has promised to do whatever it takes to complete the Ritual because she believes victory will make her mentor happy.

That missing motive is the pressure point. Most Deadlock heroes can name the thing they want from a Patron. Graves may be risking the city for somebody else’s wish, delivered through the hand she was warned never to trust.
